OVERVIEW

Water used in industrial cooling, processing, and filtering operations usually contains bacteria which frequently leads to slime-formation, biofouling and even algael blooms. If bacterial activity is left unchecked, it can lead to corrosion, reduction of heat exchange and degradation of scaling agents as well as create potential health related issues. To mitigate these damages, various types of biocides are used for proper microbial control.

GLUTARALDEHYDE

Glutaraldehyde is a broad spectrum biocide that is highly effective over a wide range of pH and temperature conditions against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria such as slime-forming bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), and acid-producing bacteria (APB). Its biocidal activity is due to the ability of glutaraldehyde to react with primary amines of the microbial cell wall, which prevents normal metabolic functions, resulting in cell death. Aquaserv offers a broad line of glutaraldehyde-based solutions, containing up to 50 percent active by weight. These glutaraldehyde-based products have found widespread use in a variety of applications that require EPA approval.

DBNPA

DBNPA is a broad spectrum, fast-acting biocide that is highly effective at low concentrations against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria such as slime-forming bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and acid-producing bacteria (APB). Its biocidal activity is due to the ability of DBNPA to inhibit cell respiration and enzyme activity, resulting in cell death. DBNPA has an outstanding environmental profile due to its fast degradation to carbon dioxide, ammonia, and bromide ion, all of which are considered innocuous to the environment. Aquaserv offers a line of DBNPA-based solutions, containing up to 20 percent active by weight. These DBNPA-based products have found widespread use in a variety of applications that require EPA approval.

THPS

THPS is a broad spectrum biocide that is highly effective against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, especially against sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) which are particularly troublesome in industrial water systems. Its biocidal activity is due to the ability of THPS to destroy proteins of the cell wall, resulting in cell death. The use of THPS has also been shown to be effective in dissolving iron sulfide and improving separation efficiency. THPS has a very good toxicity profile as well as an outstanding environmental profile. Aquaserv offers a broad line of THPS-based solutions, containing up to 75 percent active by weight. These THPS-based products have found widespread use in a variety of applications that require EPA approval.

CHLORO-METHYL-ISOTHIZAOLINONE (CMIT/MIT)

CMIT/MIT is a broad spectrum biocidal mixture that is highly effective at very low concentrations in controlling both planktonic and sessile bacteria, fungi and algae. It is specifically designed for use in water treatment and paper mill applications. CMIT/MIT causes immediate inhibition of growth on contact with active microorganisms. The growth inhibition rapidly becomes irreversible and results in cell death. Even before death occurs, the treated organism is unable to synthesize degradative enzymes or the exopolymers which facilitate surface adhesion and biofilm formation. CMIT/MIT is able to penetrate the surface of biofilms to give effective control of the sessile microorganisms.

CMIT/MIT is effective in controlling a wide variety of algae, bacteria and fungi found in industrial water systems at levels as low as 1 ppm active ingredient providing an unrivalled and cost-effective treatment. This broad spectrum activity reduces inventory and handling costs, lowers operator training expenses and lessens the risk of dosing error. Extensive toxicological testing has shown CMIT/MIT to exhibit low toxicity at recommended use levels.

BCDMH

BCDMH Tablets are a broad-spectrum halogen-releasing product for controlling the growth of planktonic and sessile algael, bacterial, and fungal populations in industrial water systems. Bromo-chloro-dimethyl-hydantoin slowly releases bromine and chlorine when placed in water to form HOCl, OCl-, HOBr and OBr-. BCDMH has been found to be very effective against filamentous bacteria and is generally less aggressive to equipment than non-stabilized halogens.

WSCP

Poly(oxy)ethylene(dimethylimino)ethylene(dimethylamine)ethylene dichloride (WSCP) or poly quat is a broad spectrum biocide that is highly effective against algae, fungi and slime-forming bacteria. When used as a water treatment microbiocide, WSCP offers dual functionality as a microbiocide and as a polymer clarifier. It is general accepted that WSCP enhances the activity of all oxidizers. WSCP-based products can be used to control the growth of algae, bacteria and fungi in cooling towers and other parts of commercial and industrial recirculating cooling water systems. Aquaserv offers a range of WSCP-based products, containing up to 60 percent active by weight. These WSCP-based products have found widespread use in a variety of water treatment applications that require EPA approval.
